To do what we say, to say what we do

28/11/2011 - This was the slogan for the XXII Open Gates workshop, which took place on November 18, at the "San Miguel” farm, in Saladillo, attracting a large audience. It was organized by the CREA Roque Perez - Saladillo Group and the Regional AAPRESID Saladillo.

“To do what we say, to say what we do” was the slogan proposed to analyze the challenges met by the Argentine farming world when it comes to build their communicational strategy: How do we put words into action? How do we communicate the message so that it is decoded by the desired recipients just the way we wish it to be decoded?

The opening was in charge or Marcelo Rey and Gonzalo Villegas, members of the CREA Roque Pérez-Saladillo Group, with a brief review of the previous workshops and of the goals set by the people carrying out this event, which is already a tradition in this region.

The day was splendid and more then 760 people attended the gathering, from producers, farming professionals, neighbors, NGOs' representatives, to university students and pupils from agricultural schools. For the first time in this event, parallel activities were carried out aimed, on the one hand, at the students, and, on the other hand, at the audience in general. The first group made visits to farms during the morning, while the other group listened to the talks in the auditorium tent.

The morning talks were divided into 2 blocks. The first one dealt with the issue of the general public outlook on the agricultural sector, How are we seen from the productive, entrepreneur and academic areas? They were given by Eng. Ricardo Hara (President of ISK Argentina, Co-Director of the Agribusiness Strategic Plan “Agro 2020”); the political scientist Juan Cruz Jaime (CEO of CASAFE); Eng. Fernando Vilella (Director of the Agribusiness and Food Program of the UBA) and Eng. Gustavo Grobocopatel (President of Grupo Los Grobo)

In the second block several actions that are already in course were presented, What are the different organizations of the sector doing to improve communication with their peers and with the different addressees?  In this sense, the APROSOJA cases were presented, Luis Nery Ribas (Technical Manager) spoke about How does the sector communicate in Brazil?; then it comes the turn of Ricky Negry (Head of Unidad I+D) who presented the NODOS Project, as a tool for strengthening the net links; and lastly, Gabriel Perez (Campo Foundation Director) dealt with the importance of identifying and recognizing the Leaders of Change, and presented the DARSECUENTA Foundation’s project.

The farms visits were in charge of the technical responsibles of companies of the Crea Roque Pérez-Saladillo Group, showing 4 different stations. The audience had the opportunity to learn about Corn with Agricultural Engineers Emilio Satorre and Juan M. Castaños, who talked about the incorporation of technology to maximize yields. Afterwards, Eng. Gustavo Duarte and Gonzalo Ropero exhibited the latest in Site Specific Agriculture; in turn, Engineers Federico Bert and Ramiro Carretero displayed all their knowledge about Fungicides; and lastly, Eng. Pablo Calviño and Manuel Bermúdez dealt with intensification without neglecting sustainability.

During the afternoon, there was a workshop for the almost 200 pupils of agricultural schools who attended the meeting. The aim of this meeting was to afford the youngsters the necessary enthusiasm to lead the project of their lives, to take the most of the learning opportunities given and to become more aware of the importance of commitment to achieve their personal goals. This workshop given by Daniel Cerezo, was supported by the testimonies of Tomás Pando, entrepreneur youngster and of pupils of the PESCAR Center Saladillo; the initiative was born of the networking among the PESCAR Foundation, the Farmers’ Association and the CREA Group -the latter was the organizer of Open Gates.

Lunch was organized by and in aid of the Center of Rural Formation and School Nº10; both educational organizations of Saladillo have been participating in this event since years.

More than 40 sponsoring companies’ stands were scattered throughout the farm (companies of the sector, banks, suppliers, service providers, consultants, car dealers); several social organizations offered their projects and products, as well.

It is worth mentioning that the profits earned with the sale of stands will be allocated to supporting educational projects of the area.
