“Time of decisions, the challenge to be competitive” was the core topic at the 4th Open Fences Workshop organized by El Tejar, the Municipality of Paysandú and the Farmers’ Association Fair Exhibition of Paysandú. With more than 1,300 people and 100 companies, the event took place at “La Rubriana” farm of the Indarte family, being this the first time it is not developed in any facility of El Tejar.
The activities began with the opening in charge of the mayor of Paysandú, Bertil Bentos, the mayoress of Porvenir, Sylvia Scaboni; the president of the Farmers' Association of Paysandú, Eduardo Filliol; the CEO of El Tejar, Horacio Ackerman; and the CEO of El Tejar Uruguay, Ismael Turbán.
Lots of youngsters from rural schools were interested in the talks about environment management, green covers with innovating species (such as field pea, black oats, lucerne and red clover), systematization of farms, fungicide tests in wheat; summer grass rotation; precision agriculture; environment differential fertilization; management of phytosanitary products’ containers; and sorghum-based power generation.
During the farm visits increased-productivity trials were shown, as a response to the challenges that are being met both at country level and worldwide.
Open Fences is a meeting that engenders a great commitment in the area since the collections are aimed at implementing educational programs in nearby schools and institutions. In this regard, Rosina Brasesco, responsible for the Commitment to Community Unit at El Tejar, Uruguay, commented: "we achieved our goals, such as agricultural innovation, together with technicians from the National Institute of Agricultural Investigation (INIA) and the Agricultural Plan Institute (IPA); institutional integration with many youngsters (22 schools from the whole country); and the training for the development of educational programs for the year 2012."
Ismael Turban, country manager of El Tejar summarized the workshop as “what the company’s mission intends to be throughout its lifetime, apart from being and generating business, planting in each place we are the seed of community work, joining the public and the private, trying to be as close as possible to the communities."
